Catelyn joins the welcome ceremony arranged for King Robert Baratheon. At the feast she exchanges cordial words with Queen Cersei Baratheon after they learn that Robert has proposed Sansa’s marraige to Prince Joffrey. Later that night, Eddard and Catelyn receive a letter from Catelyn’s sister Lady Lysa Arryn, the widow of Jon Arryn. In the letter Lysa states that Jon was killed on the behest of Queen Cersei and that the Lannister’s are conspiring against Robert Baratheon. Luwin advises Eddard that he should take up the position of the King’s Hand so that he could probe into the matter and protect Robert, while Catelyn advises him to stay in Winterfell itself. Eventually Eddard accepts Robert Baratheon’s offer and plans to take both his daughters to court with him.

Catelyn caters to Bran after his fall from a tower, and keeps praying for his recovery. Cersei Baratheon visits Catelyn and tells her that her first child, a dainty balck-haired boy, was stillborn. She and her husband were in grief and her prayers and tears were futile. She offers to pray for Bryan’s survival hoping that this time the gods would answer her prayers. Catelyn is disgusted as Jon Snow gives his farewell wishes to Bran. Eddard also leaves much to Catelyn’s annoyance, while Bran is still in a coma.

Game Of Thrones Catelyn Stark and Bran Stark

The castle’s affairs are toppled as Catelyn refuses to leave Bran unattended. Robb offers to work with Maester Luwin for the smooth running of the realm. Robb is distracted away from Bran’s room by a fire. This is indeed a trap to allow an assasin to reach Bran. However Catelyn hold back the man for long until Bran direwolf launches a severe attack. The following day Catelyn visits the tower where Bran fell and finds a blonde strand of hair inside. She calls for Robb, Theon Greyjoy, Luwin and Ser Rodrik Cassel, and expresses her strong doubt that the Lannisters tried to kill Bran because he saw something in the tower. Robb and Theon want to break out a war but Luwin cautions them against it. Catelyn decides that her husband should know the truth and decides to meet him in King’s Landing. Ser Rodrik escorts her, while Robb takes over the castle in her absence.

Catelyn alongwith Ser Rodrik arrives at King’s Landing and the duo attempts to sneak into the city, but they are spotted by Petyr Baelish’s agent. They are escorted to a brothel that Petyr owns, where Lord Varys, the king’s spymaster is also waiting, as he was informed of their arrival by one of his “little birds”. Catelyn is very upset by the way she is being treated but asks for Petyr’s help in tracking down the people that were behind Bran’s life. Petyr inform her that the elaborate dagger wielded by the assailant used to be his, but he had lost it in a gamble with Tyrion Lannister. Finally Catelyn manages to meet Eddard and discuss her doubts. Eddard promises to probe into the matter and warn Robert Baratheon against the Lannisters. Petyr vouches to be by Eddard’s side as part of his affection for Catelyn while they were young.

On their way back to Winterfell, Catelyn and Ser Rodrik take a halt at the Crossroads Inn and plan to stay overnight. They are aghast at the arrival of Tyrion Lannister. Catelyn immediately calls on several knights present there who have been sworn to her father’s bannermen to help her take Tyrion into captivity. Catelyn announces aloud that they are travelling north to Winterfell, but on the contrary takes Tyrion east into the Vale of Arryn. In the hills they are attacked by the hill tribe warriors and Catelyn frees Tyrion in order to defend himself. Tyrion saves Catelyn’s life but she is unmoved. Tyrion warns Catelyn that Lysa has lost her mental balance after her husband’s death. His warning proves to be genuine as on reaching the Eyrie Lysa and her hysterical son, Lord Robin Arryn, command Tyrion to be thrown into a sky cell, a prison with a wall that opens onto a sheer drop.

Bronn manages to defeat Ser Vardis Egen, who stood for Lady Lysa. Tyrion’s victory signifies his innocence in the eyes of the Gods and he is let free.

Catelyn continues to be at the Eyrie and tries to convince Lysa to align the Vale’s knights with the Stark contingent in opposing the Lannisters. However Lysa is not willing to take any step that would put her son’s life in danger. Catelyn finally decides to leave. Catelyn and Ser Rodrik ride north and meet Robb’s army as he marches towards the south. They align themselves into his war council, although Catelyn makes sure not to embarrass her son or put to question his decision making skills. Catelyn informs Robb that in order to confront the two Lannister armies that have invaded the Riverlands, her father’s lands, Robb’s army must cross the Green Fork of the River Trident at the Twins, which left them with no option but negotiate with the unreliable and prickly Lord Walder Frey. Robb does not quite agree, but Catelyn goes into the Twins alone and wins over Walder by entering into a marraige pact involving her son Robb and one of Walder’s daughters, accompanied by several other minor concessions. Once they cross the river Robb divides his forces, and sends a small force to delay Lord Tywin Lannister’s army, while he himself with his contingent marches ahead to confront Jaime Lannister near Riverrun. Robb is valiant and takes Jaime Lannister as prisoner.

Many of the river lords loyal to Catelyn’s father align with them, and word arrives that both Stannis and Renly, Robert’s brothers have claimed the iron throne, fiercely outnumbering the Lannisters. There is a huge debate over which king to support between the north men and the river lords, until finally Greatjon Umber suggests autonomy and names Robb as King of the North, and the other lords fill in their consent.

Later Catelyn accompanies Renly to a parley with his brother King Stannis Baratheon, but the two are not able to reach a consensus.

Catelyn visits Jaime’s cell and accuses him of being a man without honor. Jaime retaliates by saying that he has more honor than some and has slept only with Cersei and reminds her of the fact that her husband cheated on her and fathered Jon Snow. Catelyn releases Jaime planning to exchange him for her two daughters. She asks Brienne to escort him to King’s Landing, and he is successful in smuggling him out of the camp. Amongst the dead Catelyn identifies the body of Ser Jaremy Mallister, her father’s bannerman. Robb then commands for his mother to be imprisoned within the fortress.

Two messages harbouring bad news are delivered by Lord Roose Bolton. Firstly, Catelyn’s father Hoster Tully has died following a prolonged illness. Secondly, Roose hands over a letter from his bastard son Ramsay Snow, untruly stating that the ironborn torched Winterfell and laid all of his inhabitants to the sword, then ran away before his force arrived there. Barn or Rickon are not to be sighted, and although Catelyn and Robb hope that they are still alive, the possibility of them being dead was very high. All the more, there has been no word of Theon, and in case he has taken the boys captive it was surprising that the Greyjoys had not issued any demands. This dual misfortune sends Catelyn into tears and she repents to have not seen her father in many years. She is bewildered at the thought of she herself being unable to protect her sons and the fact that they would have been dead.

Game Of Thrones Season 3 Telisa and Catelyn Starkl

Catelyn’s daughter-in-law Talisa realises that she is making a prayer wheel for the Faith of the Seven, and extends a helping hand. Catelyn informs Talisa that they can be made only by mothers that are praying for the well-being of their children. After Talisa inquires Catelyn discloses that she had made the wheels twice in the past; once when she was praying for Bran to recover from his Coma which was fruitful as he survived and only lost the use of his legs. Catelyn elaborates that the second time was when the kids were young and Jon Snow was down with pox. Catelyn explains that initially she had wished for him to die but later repented and prayed for his welfare. She further went on to describe how she realized that Jon was innocent and his unidentified mother was at fault. So she stayed up with him all night and prayed to the Gods that if they forgave her earlier wish and Jon survived, she vouched that she would allow Eddard to have Jon legitimized as a Stark and she would bring him up as her own son. Jon recovered, but Catelyn broke her promise. With so much misfortune striking her all at the same time she states that the God’s are now punishing her for breaking the promise.

The funeral of Lord Hoster Tully is held on the banks of the Red Fork of the Trident River. Catelyn mourns her father’s death in her old chamber in the castle alongwith her uncle Brynden. She inquires if he has made peace with his older brother, with whom he was at war for the past thirty years. Brynden confirms that he did make peace while his brother was on his deathbed. Catelyn is very happy that the two of them had made peace before her father passed and was upset that she could not be present at the moment. At that instant she even thinks of her sons and whether they would be waiting to meet her. Brynden asserts that he and Robb have not given up and Bran and Rickon may be in hiding. He urged Catelyn to be strong for Robb’s sake.

Later Lord Rickard Karstark murders the captives Willem and Martyn Lannister in their cells, at which Robb is disgusted and discloses his plans of executing him for the sake of justice. Catelyn advises him against it explaining that the Karstak contingent would withdraw from war leaving them fiercely outnumbered. Consequently her prediction turns out to be true and Robb is in serious trouble, and finally he is left with no option but to realign with the Freys to complete his battalion.

Game Of Thrones Season 3 Rickard Karstark

Robb and his advisors meet Walder Frey and Lothar Frey to negotiate an alliance for his planned attack on Casterly Rock. Walder Frey puts forth his demands that include a formal apology from Robb, the castle Harrenhal alongwith all the lands and incomes, and for Edmure Tully to marry Roslin, his daughter.

In the Riverlands, on their way to The Twins, Robb Stark’s army is forced to make camp due to heavy rains. Catelyn makes them aware that the prickly Lord Walder Frey would take the delay as a deliberate insult to him, but Edmure Tully points out that Frey was eventually getting the wedding he wanted. Catelyn comments that he is getting a wedding, but not the one he wanted, and glares at Robb and Talisa, adding that Frey wanted one of his daughters to get married to a king.

Robb’s contingent arrives at the Twins, the castle seat of House Frey for Edmure Tully’s wedding. Lord Walder Frey nastily pricks at Robb but Catelyn pacifies him and stops him from doing anything extreme. Robb then publicly apologises to the Frey family.

The wedding is ceremonious and the couple finally departs for the bedding ceremony. Just after their departure Catelyn becomes suspicious as she notices Black Walder Rivers close the banquet hall doors and much to her surprise the musicians in the gallery begin playing “The Rains of Castamere”- the song that commemorated House Lannister’s decisive and brutal victory against the  rebellious House Reyne of Castamere. Walder gets up to make a toast to Robb, and Catelyn who is seated beside Lord Roose Bolton, notices that he is wearing mail under his clothing. Catelyn realises that they are in a trap and slaps Roose across the face and yells a warning to Robb, but it is too late. Walder Frey commands his men to attack. Lothar stabs Talisa mercilessly in the stomach and kills her unborn child. Before Robb could stand to his feet he is shot by the musicians with crossbows several times and falls to the ground. Several other Stark men are killed by the crossbow bolts.

Catelyn is wounded badly by a crossbow bolt but she manages to crawl across the floor and snatches out from under the table his scared young wife , Joyeuse. Catelyn catches a knife to the girl’s throat and threatens to kill her if Walder does not negotiate an end to the ferocious attack. She puts forth her demand and asks for Robb who is lamenting beside his dead wife, to be set free. Walder denies, dismissing his wife by saying that he would find another one. Roose Bolton finally stabs Robb in the heart saying that, “The Lannister’s send their regards”. Robb cries mother and falls to the floor against Catelyn. She is struck with immense grief and kills Walder’s wife in retaliation.
