About Season 6

The season contains 10 episodes. Filming began in July 2015 and will wrap up by the end of the year. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff will return as executive producers and show runners as they have signed a new 2 years contract with HBO in 2014 for season 5 and 6. The 6th season is expected to be on air in the Spring of 2016.

The season will be primarily based on the unreleased 6th novel Winds of Winter in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. It will also showcase material leftover from the 4th and 5th novels, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons respectively.

Season 6 Summery & Plot

Winter has arrived. The White Walkers along with their army of the dead are ready to attack and destroy the realm of the Seven Kingdoms.

In King’s Landing after being put to shame by the Faith of the Seven, Cersei awaits her trial for incest and regicide. She has been abandoned by Grand Maester Pycelle as well, and her uncle Ser Kevan Lannister is appointed the new Hand of the King. Pycelle and Kevan have a lot of damage control to do as Cersei has inflicted a lot of damage to the Lannister rule, also they need to renew the Lannister-Tyrell alignment. Meanwhile Cersei has not given up yet and has a few small schemes in place to regain power.

In the North the Boltons are victorious and have defeated King Stannis but Sansa and Theon Greyjoy have managed to escape. Brienne of Tarth has to face the consequences of avenging Renly’s murde and killing Stannis.

In Dorne Doran Martell will be forced into a war against the Iron Throne due to the poisoning of Myrcella by Ellaria Sand, something which he had been avoiding for long.

Arya Stark’s fate is to be decided, she is still under training and now leads the life of a blind girl and has to learn to make use of her other senses.

In Slaver’s Bay there is a huge bloodshed and the former slave masters conspire to seize the city. Daenerys climbed on to Drogon to try and escape the danger but he flew north to the southern border of the Dothraki Sea which is the land of his birth. Daenerys is stranded and surrounded by thousands of hostile Dothraki khalasar. Daario Naharis and Jorah Mormont are searching for her. In the meantime back in the city her advisors Grey Worm, Missandei and Tyrion Lannister are joined by Varys in an attempt to hold the city together until Daenerys returns, and this is a matter of doubt.

Lord Commander Jon Snow has been killed by the mutineers of the Night’s Watch. Just before his death he has sent away Samwell Tarly to the Citadel in Oldtown so as to get trained to be a Maester to replace Maester Aemon. Samwell takes along Gilly and her son to save them from the White Walkers. Oldtown is located in the southwest of the Reach, which is not far away from Sam’s home, the House Tarly with its castle-seat at Horn Hill.

The overtly exhausted lords of Westeros must brace now for the rise of kraken that is the ironborn led by House Greyjoy. Earlier in the War of the Five Kings, the Iron Islands’ independence was declared by Balon Greyjoy and he raided the North while the Stark’s army was busy in the south. And now the major powers of the mainland have been nearly exhausted fighting against each other.

All of these circumstances change with the unprecedented return of Balon’s exiled younger brother Euron Greyjoy, who strikes fear into the other iron born as he is cunning, ruthless, manipulative, and a little insane as well. He compels the ironborn to fight against the other kingdoms as his ultimate ambition is to rule over the Seven Kingdoms. He is staunchly opposed by Balon Greyjoy’s daughter Yara who explains that the iron islands should preserve their strength and be diplomatic if they were to survive.

Far beyond the Wall, Bran Stark continues to hone his skills in greensight, under the Three-eyed ravens tutelage. He can never walk but has now learnt to fly.

Season 6 Adaptations

While previous seasons followed a protocol of adapting one book’s material per year, Season 5 has consolidated together most of the 4th and 5th novels in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, resultantly most major storyline have been catching up with the conclusion of the 5th and most recent novel. This merely means that most of Season 6 will be based on the unpublished 6th novel of the series. George R.R. Martin has indeed given the TV producers a general outline of the happenings in the final two unpublished novels, but the TV adaptation would not be based on full text versions, neither is there any way of concluding how accurate it would be as compared to the future novels. Although Martin has already released about six preview chapters from the 6th novel, it is unclear if they will be exactly portrayed in the TV series as the previous differences testify otherwise.

Production Info

Majority of the production would take place in Northern Ireland. Interior filming returned to the headquarters at the Paint Hall studios in Belfast. In the meantime location filming took place at the below mentioned locations: Garron Point; Winterfell set in Moneyglass; Magilligan (as the Dothraki sea);  Castle Black set in Maghermorne; Ballintoy (as Pyke); Sallagh Brae in Larne; Glenarm (the Vale); Carnlough Harbour (a Braavosi canal); Shane’s Castle (foundations of the Great Sept of Baelor); Carncastle (the fields around Winterfell); Saintfield (the site for “The Battle of the Six Armies” and the new Riverrun set in Corbet.

The production set made a brief come back to Dubrovnik in Croatia.  Filming took place in Spain as well.
