About Season 4

The season was commissioned by HBO on 2 April 2013, after a noteworthy increase in audience figures between the third and second seasons. The season consists of 10 episodes and began shooting on 8th July 2013, wand wrapped up on 21st November 2013. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff came back as show runners, after having signed a new contract with HBO valid for 2 years, before the commissioning of the third season.

The season hit the television screens on April 6th 2014. Season 4 is majorly based on the second half of A Storm of Swords, the 3rd book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R.Martin, however a lot of material was also added from the 4th and 5th books, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons, which ran simultaneously but followed a different set of characters.

Season 4 Summary & Plot

The War of the Five Kings is nearing a close, but new plots are hatching up and the survivors have more enemies within than externally.

Robb Stark King in the North is dead after being betrayed by the Boltons and the Freys. His wife and mother too have been slain alongwith many soldiers of the Northern army at what came to be known as the Red Wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey.

House Lannister stands victorious as they have defeated Stannis Baratheon in the Battle of the Blackwater and overpowered South Westeros. Lord Tywin Lannister is the real power behind the Iron Throne and Joffrey Baratheon is pompous in vain. In return for their assistance, Tywin has given the Boltons the power of the North and the Freys have been given rule of Riverrun, although the main castle is still under the Tullys.

The Lannisters are still being threatened by the Greyjoys and the Baratheons. Stannis Baratheon refuses to give up despite a meager army but Melisandre advises him to indulge with the wildlings.

The Lannisters managed a huge victory due to the support of House Tyrell and now the two houses were entering into a marriage pact with Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell taking the vows.

Petyr Baelish has been sent by Lord Tywin to Lady Lysa Arryn with a marriage proposal but Baelish has his own secret plans.

Oberyn Martell of Dorne plans to avenge his sister’s rape and murder and claims a seat on the Small Council in King’s Landing.

In the meantime, across the Narrow Sea in Slaver’s Bay, Daenerys Targaryen is fully prepared with her dragons growing to a full size and an army of 8000 unsullied warrior eunuchs. She is on a liberation trail through the cities under slavery, emerging victorious and adding the liberated slaves to her army.

Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly do their best to prepare Castle Black for the ensuing massive wildling attack. Amidst all this the survivors of House Stark, Sansa, Rickon, Bran and Arya are all struggling for existence.
