About Ygritte

Ygritte was a woman that hailed from the Free Folk that lived north of the Wall. She was an integral part of Mance Rayder’s army and the lover of Jon Snow.

Biography of Ygritte

Ygritte was a very witty and courageous young spearwife. She had red hair and was a highly skilled archer. As she was living north of the Wall, she was very well skilled in survival and was a staunch supporter of Mance Rayder. Ygritte valued her status as a free woman and dubbed those living south of the Wall as “kneelers” who blindly followed family hierarchy without choosing a proper king.

Ygritte believed that since the wildlings and Northerners both descent from the First Men, there was no meaning in them fighting and they are separated only by the geographical divide of the Wall. Related to other wildlings, Ygritte was aware that the real threat was from the impending invasion of the White Walkers.

Ygritte in season 2

Ygritte was captivated by Jon Snow and Qhorin Halfhand as she was the sole survivor of their attack on her watchpost. She asked her captors to burn the bodies of her companions but Qhorin denies. He then asks Jon to execute her and leaves, but Jon cannot bring himself to kill her. While Jon hesitates to stroke his sword, Ygritte escapes, but is recaptured by Jon, who in the process is isolated from his brothers. As night approaches, Jon refuses to make a fire, forcing them to sleep out in the cold. Ygritte convinces him to cuddle up so as to share body warmth and then makes sexual advances towards him.

The next morning Jon takes along Ygritte to find Qhorin. On the way she gets into an argument with Jon, saying that the North belonged to the Free Folk much before the Andals came in. She then lures Jon off his guard by trying to instigate him and manages to escape leading Jon into a wildling ambush.

Ygritte brings Jon before the Lord of Bones who orders his execution. However Ygritte convinces Rattleshirt that Mance would want to question Jon due to his Stark blood. The Lord of Bones brings forth Qhorin, who was captured by him. Qhorin then blames Jon for the death of his men, and Ygritte is upset over this. She is unaware that Qhorin was just pretending and it was a plan to plant Jon as a spy in Mance Rayder’s army.

On their way to meet Mance Rayder, Ygritte continues to toy with Jon. Qhorin instructs Jon to fight with him and kill him so that he could join the wildlings. Ygritte and her folk are stunned and accept Jon into their contingent by freeing his hands.

Ygritte escorts Jon Snow into Mance Rayder’s camp in the Frostfang Mountains. While they are walking some young boys pelt Jon with stones and ice, Ygritte protects Jon and shoos the kids away. When they enter Mance Rayder’s tent she ensures his safety and his adoption as one of the Free Folk.

Later Ygritte travels with Jon and Mance as they are marching gradually south towards the Wall. They come across one of his scouts, Orell. Ygritte is very surprised to find out that Jon has never seen a warg before.

On their way south towards the Wall, Ygritte and her Free Folk arrive at the Fist of the First Men. Mance orders Ygritte together with Jon and a group of twenty wildlings headed by Tormund, to scale the Wall and launch an attack on Castle Black from the south. Just before leaving the camp Ygritte playfully steals Jon’s sword and makes him chase her into a grotto. Ygritte stands naked before Jon and kisses him. As she climbs Ygritte makes a massive crack that dislodges a large sheet of ice and kills several wildlings. She and Jon are left merely hanging by their safety rope. Orell is of the opinion that Tormund cannot continue climbing with the weight of Jon and Ygritte’s body pulling them down, and starts cutting the rope. Knowing her skill as a markswoman, Tormund says that if Jon is alive it is because she did not want him dead. A group of Thenns led by Styr arrives, bringing along food from a raid farther south. Styr asks if Ygritte was his woman to which she reacts vehemently. Styr then sits next to the fire to cook his meat, a human arm.

Ygritte and the wildling band attack a village and kill almost all of the residents. Ygritte inspects Castle Black’s defenses and reports that most of the men are on the Wall and few are remaining in the castle. The contingent prepares to attack while Ygritte is hesitant. During the battle, she kills many brothers of the Night’s Watch including Pypar. She corners Jon Snow and aims an arrow at him. Meeting him weakens her in the knees and she is reluctant, and while she id off guard Olly shoots her through the chest from behind.
