About Robert Baratheon

Robert Baratheon played by Mark Addy is a major charachter in the first season. He was the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, initially referred to as Robert of the House Baratheon. Robert acquired the throne through conquest in the war termed as Robert’s Rebellion. He was a mighty warrior in his youth and killed Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, in the Battle of Trident. Post the war Robert married Cersei Lannister to forge an alliance with House Lannister to hold the two kingdoms together, but the marraige was loveless. The couple have three children: Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen. Robert was unaware of the fact that all three were actually fathered by Cersie’s twin brother, Jaime Lannister.

Robert was disinterested in running his kingdom and spent much of his next seventeen years whoring, drinking and hunting. The task of ruling was thrust upon his small council. Robert is a childhood friend of Eddard Stark and treats him as his true brother. He names Ned Hand of the King after the previous hand dies under mysterious circumstances. After probing into the death of his predecessor Eddard found that the deceased was scrutinising the parentage of Cersei’s children. Due to the fear of being caught Cersei orders Robert’s squire, Lancel Lannister, to give him excessive wine while hunting. Robert is gravely injured by a wild boar and succumbs to his injuries soon. Robert appoints Eddard Protector of the Realm just before his death. Later Cersei disregards the proclamation, has Eddard arrested, and overpowers the throne for her son, Joffrey. The consequential dispute leads to the War of the Five Kings.

Biography of Robert Baratheon

Robert’s father Steffon Baratheon was the head of House Baratheon and Lord Paramount of the Stormlands. The Stormlands are one of the constituents of the Seven Kingdoms and House Baratheon is among one of the Great Houses of the realm. Robert’s parents died in a storm when he was young. He inherited the lordship, and was brought up under the guardianship of Jon Arryn, the head of House Arryn, another Great House. Eddard Stark, the second son of House Stark, was also put under the care of Jon Arryn and Robert and Eddard were as good as brothers.

Robert served King Aerys II Targaryen ( known as the Mad King) in the capacity of the Lord Paramount of the Stormlands. Robert was engaged to Lyanna Stark, Eddard’s sister. Lyanna was taken hostage by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. The mad king killed Eddard’s father and brother as they protested against the kidnapping. The aftermath of these deaths was a massive war led by Robert, Eddard and Jon Arryn. Lyanna and Aerys were deceased during the civil war that followed. As Robert started the war and killed Prince Rhaegar personally he claimed the Iron Throne, another fact was that he was related to the Targaryens through his paternal grandmother, Rhaelle Targaryen. His colleagues in the rebellion, Jon Arryn and Eddard Stark both stood aside and proclaimed Robert as king on account of his claim and charismatic personality.

Robert was very upset over Lyanna’s death, but was convinced by Jon Arryn to marry Cersei of House Lannister, crafting an alliance with her father, Tywin Lannister, who had joined the conflict a little late and had delivered the capital of King’s Landing to him. Robert bestowed the title of his Hand on Jon Arryn whilst Eddard took up his father’s role as Warden of the North.

Robert has been the King of the Andals and the First Men and the Emperor of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros since the end of the civil war. However he paid no heed to the running of his kingdom revelling in past glory and resorted to heavy drinking, whoring and hunting. He was crazy about holding various tournaments on which he spent handsomely. As a consequence after seventeen years the realm has drowned in a debt of a extravagant six million Gold Dragons, half of that to House Lannister.

Jon Arryn began to probe the lineage of Cersei’s children, and he compared their appearance to Robert’s bastard children. Shortly after beginning  his investigation Jon was silenced forever by Cersei. Robert decides to name Eddard as Jon Arryn’s replacement.

Robert Baratheon in Season 1

The royal contingent arrives in Winterfell and Lord Eddard presents his household to King Robert. Robert formally puts forth his decision and offers Eddard the role of Hand of the King, convincing him that he needs a trustworthy source to run his kingdom and admits that he fears betrayal from within his court. Eddard requests for some time to think over Robert’s proposal. Robert agrees and as an icing on the cake proposes the marraige of his son Joffrey to Eddard’s daughter Sansa. A grand feast is held in honor of the King’s visit to Winterfell.  The following morning Eddard and Robert go hunting whereto Eddard accepts the offer.

Both the contingents depart Winterfell. Several days later, on the Kingsroad south to the capital, Robert orders a halt to talk over some fresh news with Eddard. Robert’s espionage has reported Daenerys Targaryen’s marraige to Khal Drogo whose “khalasar” is reported to house over one hundred thousand people. Eddard clears doubts that the Dothraki cannot cross the Narrow Sea, as they do not have ships. But Robert is being bothered by the fact that the Seven Kingdoms will soon face a new war.

Game of thrones season 1 - Sansa Stark, direwolf

On the Kingsroad, the royal contingent reaches the Crossroads Inn, a well known stop on the way south to the capital. During the halt Joffrey is subject to injuries by Nymeria, a direwolf belonging to Ned’s younger daughter Arya. Arya is made to stand before Robert and narrates the incident truthfully blaming Joffrey for instigating the incident. But Joffrey claims to be innocent and is supported by Sansa. Robert is furious over the fued and decides to let Ned discipline Arya and he himself would tame Joffrey, but to appease Cersei he agrees that a direwolf must be executed. Nymeria cannot be found, so Robert orders that Sansa’s wolf Lady must be killed instead.

Game of thrones season 1- Robert and Cersei

After returning to King’s Landing Robert declares a tournament to celebrate Eddard’s appointment as King’s Hand. He refrains from the small council meetings where issues such as the mounting debt and the dangers related to the payment of the tournament are raised.

Robert learns that Daenerys is pregnant and commands that she and her brother Viserys Targaryen be put to death. Eddard firmly disagrees and resigns as Hand, leaving Robert very enraged. Later Robert and Cersei discuss the matter and Cersei asks Robert if losing Eddard in this way was wise and questions him as to why he was so worried over the prospect of a Targaryen-aligned Dothraki army. Robert explains that in the event of the Dothraki crossing the Narrow Sea, the nobles can retreat to their castles, but the smallfolk would definitely be slaughtered, and the nobles in the castle would starve while the Dothraki rove outside the gates.

Game of thrones season 1 - injured Robert

In the meantime Eddard is wounded fighting Jaime and his guards. He is recovering at the Tower of the Hand where Robert and Cersei visit him. Cersei is boiling with anger as Eddard has arrested her brother Tyrion and has fought with Jaime, but Eddard is unmoved. She wants Robert to condemn Eddard but Robert refuses.  Later Robert restores Eddard to his position as King’s Hand and requests him not to quit again or he would give the position to Jaime Lannister. He asks Ned to end the strife between House Stark and House Lannister as it could lead them into war. Robert informs Ned that he is leaving on a hunt in the Kingswood and wanted peace by the time he would return.

Robert is out hunting and has taken Selmy, Lancel and Renly with him. Lancel as instructed by Cersei supplies excessive wine to Robert and he becomes over drunk and nostalgic. Robert is intensely wounded while trying to kill a boar. He is taken back to the capital and on his death bed confesses to Joffrey that he wished he could have been a better father. Robert in isolation with Eddard names him as Lord Regent and Protector of the Realm. Eddard has discovered that Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen are not Robert’s children but he is unable to tell the dying Robert that they have been fathered by Jaime. Robert asks him to cancel the assasination of Daenerys Targaryen but it was too late. Post Robert’s death, Cersei destroys the proclamation of Eddard as Regent and Protector of the Realm and orders his arrest. Renly flees the city after telling Eddard that he would make a better king than Stannis. Robert’s death fuels the War of the Five Kings with Renly and Stannis, Joffrey, Balon Greyjoy, and Robb Stark vying for the throne.
