About Petyr Baelish

Petyr Baelish, known as Littlefinger, is among the major characters in all the five seasons. He is very well portrayed by Aidan Gillen. He is the Master of Coin on the Small Council. He is an adept conspirator and uses all his power to gather intelligence on rivals and gain hell lot of wealth.

He once abandoned Eddard Stark after the death of Robert Baratheon, and became the hellion of the War of the Five Kings.  After the Battle of Blackwater, King Joffrey announces Petyr Baelish as the Lord of Harrenhal. He marries Lysa Arryn and assassinates her after he becomes the Lord Protector of the Vale.

Biography of Petyr Baelish

Petyr Baelish is the chief of the House Baelish, but he is not so small but not as big as called as a maester. He is at present the only member of House Baelish who is alive.

House Baelish has very meagre origins and not a particular progeny: Petyr’s great grandfather was a small sellsword from Braavos who arrived at the Vale on House Corbray’s invitation. Petyr’s grandfather was a poor hedge knight.

Petyr’s father was a soldier in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, the accroach assault on the army of Maelys Blackfyre, the only Blackfyre Pretenders, before they can attack Westeros. During the tiff, Petyr’s father served well under Lord Hoster Tully.

Petyr then went to Riverrun when he was just eight years old; carrying everything he had with him. When he reached Riverrun, he started becoming friendly with Catelyn and Lysa Tully, Hoster’s daughters. Edmure, their brother jokingly kept his name “Littlefinger” due to his small stature. The same nickname remains stick to him through his whole life. Even Petyr likes the nickname so he also adjoins it with his own name.

Petyr used to like Catelyn but she never reciprocated to his feelings. Lysa liked Petyr but he only loved Catelyn. When she was engaged to Brandon Stark, the heir to Lord of Winterfell and Lord Paramount of the North, Petyr confronted for a duel with him, he was over confident and so he was nearly killed by Brandon but saved by Catelyn. With humiliation, Petyr returns back to Vale. But unfortunately, Brandon is assassinated by Mad King Aerys II Targaryen at the Robert’s Rebellion and so Catelyn marries to Eddard Stark, Brandon’s younger brother and Lysa is married to Jon Arryn to secure a political alliance. Petyr cunningly starts serving for Jon and becomes the customs officer at Gulltown, who increases the port’s revenues very much. By witnessing Petyr’s cunning financial affairs, Jon is convinced and brings him to the royal court at King’s Landing and appoints him as the Master of Coin on Robert Baratheon’s Small Council. His power gradually grew in the court. He started buying brothels and this helps him in keeping a watch over the officials. Due to earlier friendship with Petyr, Catelyn trusts him.

Petyr Baelish greets Eddard Stark when he reach King’s Landing and tells him about the debt they have. Catelyn Stark and Ser Rodrick Cassel try to enter the city without anyone noticing them but Petyr’s men find them easily. They are taken to rendezvous with Petyr. Catelyn grow furious by the way they treated them and ask Littlefinger to help them find the people who tried killing Bran Stark. Littlefinger cunningly answers her that the dagger which is wielded by the killer used to be his own, but he lost it to Tyrion Lannister.

Petyr asks Eddard to rendezvous with his wife, but Eddard suddenly realizes that he is insulting him by calling his wife a prostitute and throws him against a wall. After hearing the news from her, Petyr tells Eddard to be his ally to expose the Lannisters to Robert and he believes him thinking that Petyr still loves Catelyn.

Littlefinger gives him more evidences proving that he genuinely supports him. He also notifies him some agents of Varys and Queen. He later tells Sansa Stark about how his face was blazed by Sandor Clegane when he was young. He also asks her not to mention this to Sandor.

Littlefinger succumbs to defeat to Renly Baratheon. He tells that he knows about the relationship between Loras and Renly, leaving Renly uncomfortable. Little terrifies Renly that he will reveal it to the King that he met Illyrio Mopatis and Varys threatens him that he will reveal Lannisters that he helped Tyrion in the murder of Bran Stark. But then they both aid to kill Daenerys Targaryen before Westeros is invaded by the Dothraki’s.

Littlefinger then introduces Mhaegan to Eddard, a commercial sex worker and the mother of Eddard’s bastard children. Outside the brothel Eddard engages in a fight with Ser Jaime Lannister. Littlefinger escapes from there by saying that he will bring City Watch with him.

Littlefinger is left shocked when Eddard asks Gregor Clegane to be arrested and killed for his raids on the Riverlands and also Tywin Lannister to come in the court. Littlefinger tells Eddard that Tywin is the richest man in the Westeros and his gold is his power. But Eddard do not agree and says then why he is not the king.

Eddard tells Littlefinger the truth about Joffrey’s parentage and tells that after Robert will die Stannis will be the one to sit on the throne.

Littlefinger rather suggests that they should let Joffrey sit on the throne and rule from behind. If he does not prove himself, they can reveal the secret and install Lord Renly in his place. Eddard disagrees to the plan and says to win over City Watch. Littlefinger agrees to do so but later City Watch turns on Eddard’s men and murders them and when Littlefinger holds a dagger to Eddard’s throat, he exclaims that he had admonished him not to trust.

Lord Baelish asks Queen to give Sansa a chance to prove her loyalty. He suspiciously glances at Varys as Sansa apologizes for her father’s deeds.

Littlefinger confabulates with Varys about kingship and they involve in a small banter. They eventually show their admiration and respect for each other before being disturbed by Joffreyand his men.

The citadel announces the commencement of winter and Littlefinger admonishes the small council that they do not have enough amount of food. Cersei asks to stop the refugees from the War of the Five Kings. Tyrion Lannister enters to take his own position as acting Hand of the King.

Stannis Baratheon comes to know about Jaime Lannister’s carnal relationship with Cersei. Stannis dispatches his own memorandum to all the high lords of the Seven Kingdoms asking them to declare their loyalty. Cersei asks Littlefinger to find out Arya Stark. Joffrey Baratheon replies to the subsequent rumors by commanding a city wide massacre of his father’s bastards. The city watch enters into Littlefinger’s brothel and assassinate Barra, an infant in front of all employees.

Littlefinger denies a request from the Night’s Watch for helping them fighting Wildling activity and reporting a skirmish by Wights. Tyrion expels Lord Janos Slynt to the Wall for his role in the massacre. Littlefinger terrifies her that she should continue her work despite of the horrifying murder she witnessed.

Tyrion rendezvous with Littlefinger and talks about the plan of marrying Myrcella Baratheon to Robin Arryn to protect the support of the Vale.       He affianced to make Littlefinger the Lord of Paramount of the Riverlands and Lord Harrenhal if he kept it as a secret. Pycelle is arrested for telling that Tyrion is going to marry Myrcella into House Martell. Littlefinger accosts Tyrion who apologize and asks for one more opportunity.

Littlefinger meets Catelyn at Renly Baratheon’s camp in Stormlands. He receives a wintry reception from Renly but will like to betray Lannisters and open the gates for Renly’s army in King’s Landing. He starts taking more interest in Margaery, Renly’s new bride and tells her that he knows that it is a political marriage as Renly is homosexual. He rendezvous with Catelyn as per the plan and gives the remains of Eddard as a sign of good will. She angrily greets him for betraying Eddard. He delivers Tyrion’s message of exchanging Jaime for Arya and Sansa. Renly dies in mysterious way and Littlefinger then meets Tyrells with another plan telling that they should make an alliance with Joffrey.  This will allow keeping Margaery as queen and Loras Tyrell can revenge on Stannis. He leaves for Highgarden. Catelyn frees Jaime alone from Robb’s camp as suggested by Littlefinger.

 Littlefinger is escalated to Lord of Harrenhal in reward as succeeding in breaking the alliance. He mocks that he should now produce some heirs. Sansa’s engagement with King Joffrey is broken so that he can now wed to Margaery. Sansa is overjoyed but she tries to act as she is sad. Littlefinger admonish Sansa that she is not fooling anyone and Joffrey is not going to leave her.

Lord Petyr also tells her that she reminds him of Catelyn and asks to take her to Winterfell but she does not trust him.

Baelish connives with Sansa Stark that he plans to get her out the city hidden on his ship.

As the new Lord of Harrenhal, Littlefinger’s status is elevated enough to leave the position of Master of Coin to Tyrion, buy a ship and start preparing to sail for Eyrie with a wedding proposal to Lysa Arryn. Knowing very well that if he marries Sansa she could be more powerful wife than Lysa, he still takes her with him. Ros who is now secretly working for Varys, knows about his intentions and succeeds in convincing Lady Olenna Tyrell to marry Sansa to Loras.

After asking Littlefinger to gather information about the Tyrells about being homosexual, Littlefinger asks Olyvar, one of his homosexual prostitutes to be Loras’s squire and allure him. He does so and manages to acquire information about the secret wedding plans. After sometime, Littlefinger realizes the plan of Varys and so tells everything to Tywin and Cersei.

Baelish comes to a conclusion that Ros might have betrayed him and so he gives her to Joffrey who torments and murders her with a crossbow. In the throne room, Littlefinger accosts Varys about his curbed plot. Varys tells him that he did what is beneficial for the kingdom.

So Littlefinger tells him that this kind of ideology is good to climb up ladders. His ship then leaves for Vale of Arryn.

After Joffrey’s demise, Dontos Hollard gives Sansa Stark to Baelish’s ship. After Sansa climbs in, Lord Baelish tells her that Dontos about his money. When Baelish cinches his fingers, and crossbowmen murders Dontos. Baelish takes Sansa’s necklace and throws overboard.

Lord Baelish goes to Sansa’s cabin and tells her that they are moving to Vale. She blames of killing Joffrey, at first he does not agree but Sansa knew very well he has some role in murder of Joffrey. He agrees to it, exclaiming the poison in the necklace and telling that Joffrey was not trustworthy and had to be killed. Because Baelish was away from a long time and so nobody can suspect him for murdering and so it is done to confuse the Lannisters, which was the plan of Lady Olenna, his new friend.

Sansa pretends as Alayne, niece of Petyr Baelish pass through the Bloody Gate and make their entry into the Eyrie where they rendezvous with Lysa Arryn and Robin Arryn. After Sansa is enlightened with the two of them. Robin takes Sansa with her and Lysa tells him that she wants to marry him. He is averted at first but then asks her that he wants to inform the Lords of Vale about the wedding ceremony. She then tells her that she did killed her husband for him and also wrote letter to her sister Catelyn that Lannister’s killed him. He kisses her before anyone could hear them. Lysa then brings a septon so that they could marry in the hall.

Littlefinger tries to calm down Sansa when she slaps Robin when he ruins her snowcastle made by her at the courtyard. She tells him that she does not want to see Winterfell again but Baelish tells her that if she wants to build a new house, she have to destroy the old one. Sansa asks him desperately why he killed Joffrey. He tells her that he did it for Catelyn’s love. He suddenly smooches her. Petyr protects Sansa from Lysa when she tries throwing Sansa from the Moon Door. After Lysa is hushed, he tells her that he loved only Catelyn and pushes Lysa from the Moon Door.

After Lysa’s demise, Petyr is queried by Lord Yohn Royce, Lady Anya Waynwood, and Ser Vance Corbray about Lysa’s demise. The lords does not believe him when he tells that she committed a suicide. They ignore Littlefinger’ explanations and turns to only other witness Alayne, his niece. Alayne then reveals her true identity and tells everything she went through and about the mental stability of Lysa, her jealousy and her death but just changed some of the facts. Sansa shows like she is crying and succeeds in convincing the lords.

After the questioning session ends Petyr warns the lords for not giving the details in the Vale during the War of the Five Kings. When they ask whom they should bring back, he replies that they should bring Robin Arryn. When the lords scorn at his suggestion, calling him a little sick boy, he replies that even little sick boys can be a powerful men. He asks to take him on a tour of Vale and lords agree to it.

Afterwards, Baelish meets Sansa and ask her why she lied in front of the lords. Sansa tells him that she doesn’t know what the lords wanted from her but she knows what he wanted from her. Littlefinger is impressed but shows a hint of doubt on his face. Sometime later, Robin and Petyr stand in the High Hall before departing to Vale. Robin shows a bit of uncertainty on his face for leaving Eyrie. Petyr tells him that people die daily and he should focus on the time he spends rather than the way he could die. At the same time, Sansa appears flaunting a black dress with a loe neckline from the stairs, smiling at him.

Littlefinger attends a sword hostile session for Robin at Runestone accompanied by Alayne and Yohn Royce. Royce remarks on Robin’s shaky skills. A raven comes to his master with certain message. Littlefinger leaves Robin with Yohn Royce for further training and leaves. While on the carriage ride he is queried by Sansa as why they heading towards west when he told Lord Royce that they are going to Fingers. Petyr tells her that he is taking her to a faraway place where she will be safe from Cersei.

At the inn, Petyr and Sansa are accosted by Brienne of Tarth, who swears to Catelyn Stark to keep the Stark girls safe. Petyr tells her that she swear to Renly Baratheon and Catelyn, and no one is alive amongst them. He did this so that Sansa should not trust her. Brienne and Podrick Payne flees and secretely follows Petyr and his men.

But when the party enters in Moat Cailin, Sansa comes to know that Petyr wants to marry her to Roose Bolton’s son, Ramsay Bolton. Roose Bolton is the one who betrayed and killed her mother and brother. Sansa is not willing to marry him but Petyr tells him that she can take revenge for her mother and brother’s murder. He speak to Roose about Sansa and Tyrion’s marriage validity. Petyr also tells him that since Tyrion and Sansa didn’t slept with each other, their marriage is not considered valid. Roose then gives Petyr a letter from Cersei and asks him to read his reply before sending it.

Afterwards, Petyr finds Sansa in the crypts of Winterfell paying tribute to her demised family members. Petyr tells her how Rhaegar Targaryen abducted Lyanna, Sansa’s aunt which resulted in the commencement of Robert’s rebellion. Petyr also tells her that he has to go to Winterfell back on Cersei’s order and also tells her that she is safe in Winterfell. He kisses her on lips and leaves.

Baelish comes back to King’s Landing. Lancel Lannister admonishes him that his days as a brothel owner has ended. He then leaves to rendezvous Cersei and tells her about the Bolton’s plan of marrying Sansa to Ramsay. Furious after listening to the plan, she agrees to lead an army of Vale knights to reclaim the North to Winterfell. In reply he wanted him to be designated as the Warden of North once Winterfell is captured. Cersei agrees to him.

Petyr then stands and looks at his ruined brothel with a sheer look of regret on his face. Olenna Tyrell comes to talk to him. Olenna tells how about Margaery and Loras, her grandchildren arrested by Cersei and asks for help. She also tells her that if House Tyrell goes down then she will tell everyone about role of Littlefinger in Joffrey’s assassination.

Baelish tells her that Cersei requested him to King’s Landing for “a piece of information he had”, his whore Olyvar, and also tells Olenna that he will also give the same thing he had gave Cersei: a handsome young man – this time it is Lancel. Afterwards Lancel tells that he was indulged in an affair with Cersei, which results in the arrest of Cersei.
