About Jorah Mormont

Ser Jorah Mormont is amongst the major characters of Game of Thrones and is portrayed by Iain Glen. He is an ousted Northern lord now living in Essos. He is loyal to his fellow oust Daenerys Targaryen and helps her in adapting to life as a Khaleesi of Dothraki.

He used to work as a spy for Varys, King Robert Baratheon’s spymaster in King’s Landing. But then he started serving for Daenerys Targaryen. He saves her from a murder attempt and stops sending reports to Varys and ignores the pass to allow him return to Westeros. He develops a very strong bond with her and for her. When Daenerys come to know about his spying, she dismisses him from the court and asks him to go far away from her, but he tries to gain her trust when he gifts her Tyrion Lannister.

Biography of Jorah Mormont

Jorah is the son of Jeor Mormont.  He had a very distinguished early career when he participated in the Siege of Pyke during the Greyjoy Rebellion. His father afterwards joined the Night’s Watch keeping Jorah as the Lord of Bear Island and chief of House Mormont.

Jorah weds to Lynesse Hightower but Jorah couldn’t make her happy as she likes to live a lavish life and Jorah was not able to cope up with the expenses.  Jorah was caught when he started selling poachers to slavery and was heavily disgraced.  He then escapes to Free Cities to avoid being assassinated by Eddard Stark. His wife eventually leaves him for a richer man.

He is also called Jorah the Andal by Dothraki, as they assume him as an Andal as he hails from Westeros but he actually is a Northman. Jorah also knows how to speak Common Tongue of Westeros and is fluent in Dothraki language.

Jorah Mormont In Season 1

Jorah attends the wedding of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen. He introduces himself and gives a present of some books of stories and songs of Westeros to Daenerys. He tells her about he served for her father for many years, and also pledges to serve Viserys, her brother.

While travelling to Vaes Dothrak, he tells Viserys about how he lost his home. Eddard Stark wants to execute him, but he escaped. Viserys says that he will tolerate such things as foolishness and Mormont suggests him that such things would never happen again.

Ser Jorah seems impressed by Daenerys’ commanding ability when Viserys tries to hit her. Viserys asks Jorah to kill Daenerys’ men but he ignores his command by telling that he is under Daenerys’ now. Rakharo takes Viserys’ horse so that he has to walk which is considered as a disgrace of the Dothraki. Jorah tells Daenerys that her father was a man of great integrity and honor and Jorah’s disgrace betrayed him. When Jorah comes to know about Daenerys’ pregnancy, he rides to the Free City of Qohor. It later comes to know that he went there to tell this to Varys.

After arriving at Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys asks Jorah whether Dothraki could take back the Seven Kingdoms to which Mormont tells that it would be a very difficult task. They later move to confabulate about Jorah’s background and he agrees selling the poachers as slaves only to raise some more money for his wife. Daenerys asks where is his wife now to which he exclaims that she is with another man in another place.

Eddard Stark learns in King’s Landing that Jorah Mormont is spying Daenerys and is an agent of Varys. He trusts Jorah little bit but Robert Baratheon considers Jorah’ information totally trustworthy and command to kill Daenerys.

Jorah translates for the benefit of Viserys at the ceremony where Daenerys gulps a stallion’s heart. Viserys thinks it is disgusting but he soon realizes that Dothraki loves Daenerys so he slips away. Jorah finds him who was trying to steal Daenerys’ three eggs. Viserys blames Jorah of having desires for Daenerys, but Jorah still stops him from leaving. Viserys then leaves without the eggs. Afterwards, when Viserys threaten Daenerys, Jorah tries to stop him, as killing someone in the sacred city is punishable. When Drogo kills Viserys with a pot of molten gold, he asks Daenerys to look away but she denies.

Jorah with Daenerys and her handmaidens goes to the market where he receives a message from a lad that the Spider sends his regard and tells him that he can go home now. He then saves Daenerys when a wineseller tries to gift her. Drogo rewards him with a horse before pledging to invade and capture the Seven Kingdoms as revenge.

Jorah accompanies Daenerys to the lands of Lhazar. When Daenerys commands Dothraki warriors to stop abusing the local women, Jorah helps her carrying the command which upsets the Dothraki. He sees the fight between Drogo and Mago. Drogo wins it but sustains a small wound.

Drogo’s condition worsens; Daenerys is stunned that her unborn son will be assassinated in the resulting power struggle to succeed Drogo. Jorah asks her that they should leave their secretly Daenerys denies him. She pleads Mirri Maz Duur to help Drogo with blood magic. When Qotho tries to stop the ceremony, Ser Jorah stops him with a sword. Jorah kills him with a lot of efforts. Daenerys goes into labor but midwives are afraid to help her so Jorah takes her to Drogo’s tent to seek Duur’s help.

Daenerys wakes up and find Jorah with her who asks her to take rest, but she asks him to take her to Drogo and her child. She learns that her child was stillborn and Drogo is alive but in a state of coma. Duur agrees that she worsened Drogo’ health and killed her son to avenge the destruction of her village. Daenerys kills Drogo to end his suffering. She creates a funeral pyre for Drogo and places her dragon eggs on it and also binds Duur to the pyre to blaze her alive. Jorah tries to tell Daenerys not to burn the eggs as they can be sold to buy her an eccentric and lavish life. He also asks her not to walk in the pyre but she gives an enthralling speech to the people and walks in the pyre.

Jorah, Daenerys and the khalasar’ stands till the fires burn out; they find Daenerys and her three hatched eggs unhurt. An astonished Jorah declares Daenerys his queen using the Dothraki declaration.

Jorah accompanied by Daenerys and khalasar crosses the Red Waste. Jorah tells her going back to Lhazar or the Dothraki Sea might be a suicidal attempt. He also tells her to be strong for her people. She tells him that he is her strength and asks her bloodriders to guide them on the three remaining horses.

The khalasar sit in spite of the heat as they wait for the scouts. Jorah notifies a horse coming towards them and arouse Daenerys. Jorah notifies blood coming out of the saddlebag and when he opens it, he finds Rakharo’s head in it. Jorah admonishes Daenerys not to look at it but she denies him. She asks him who might kill him and he answers that it might be Khal Pono or Khal Jhaqo.

Kavarro comes back to the camp. He tells Daenerys that he has given a new horse by the Thirteen, who is the leader of the Qarth. He tells Daenerys that the Thirteen has invited her to the city.

Jorah with the rest of khalasar reaches the Qarth. Daenerys is furious when she is not allowed to enter the city and Jorah admonishes her to be careful. Xaro Xhoan Davos interrupts on behalf of Daenerys and let them enter inside the city.

Xaro holds a reception for Daenerys and her khalasar. Pyat Pree invites Daenerys to the House of the Undying. Quaithe admonishes Jorah that Daenerys should be protected from the people who wants to steal her eggs. Xaro asks Daenerys to fund her invasion of Westeros in exchange of marrying her. Afterwards, she asks Jorah about the proposal and he warns her about the financial help. He unintentionally reveals the feeling for her.

While Jorah is away for finding a ship, Daenerys asks the members of the Thirteen to help her. She is denied and when she returns to Xaro’s home, she finds that some of her guards are assassinated and her eggs are stolen. Jorah comes back in a hurry when he hears the news. He speaks with Quaithe, who admonish him that Daenerys is with a thief. He finds her asking the Thirteen to give back her dragons but they all tell her that they don’t know anything. Then they go to the House of Undying with Pyat Pree as part of the deal struck with Xaro. Suddenly a hell lot of events happen and Daenerys and Jorah go far away from each other. Jorah tells her to leave the dragons but she exclaims him that they are her children. She reminds Jorah that she has her own magic.

While searching for an entrance, Daenerys magically transports inside, leaving Jorah disgusted. When Daenerys meets her dragons, she asks them to breathe fire, killing the sorcerer and escape from there. They went to Xaro and left stunned when he is seen sleeping with Doreah. Daenerys then locks Doreah and Xaro at the vault to die and asks the khalasar to take all the gold and jewel.

Jorah with Daenerys sails to Astapor from Qarth. They went to meet Kraznys mo Nakloz and witnesses his horrific deed with his soldiers. While the conversation is going on, Daenerys is disrupted by a small girl playing with a ball. A stranger appears from behind and tries to knock the ball from her hand, Jorah fights with him. The ball falls on the floor and revealed to be a manticore, which the hooded stranger jabs with his dagger. When he removes his hood, Jorah tells that he is Ser Barriston Selmy.

Jorah, Ser Barriston Selmy and Daenerys reach the walk of punishment. Barriston tells Daenerys that it is not a thing to be honored to conquer with a purchased slave army. Jorah tells that honor does not help in winning battles and Unsullied are not a normal army. Daenerys gives a dragon to Kraznys in return of his 8,000 Unsullied. Jorah and Barriston seem to be unhappy but she scolds both them for contradicting her in public.

Daenerys manages to keep both his dragons and the trust of people at the Sack of Astapor and becomes the queen.

While going to Yunkai, Jorah tries to recollect with Barriston about the day he was knighted by Robert Baratheon. Barriston tells Jorah that his presence might deteriorate Daenerys image in Westeros. Barriston tells Jorah that Robert Baratheon does not trust him totally as he was the spy of Varys .

After reaching at the gates of Yunkai, Jorah dismisses Barriston’ and Daenerys’ claims. He advises Dany that it is useless to capture Yunkai as it won’t help her to conquer the Westeros, but she is stubborn on freeing the hundreds of thousands of slaves.

Jorah is in Daenerys’ tent when the Yunkish slave trader Razdal mo Eraz enters with presents. Daenerys asks to spy on the Second Sons and when he comes back to Daenerys’ tent, she is seen sitting with Mero and Prendahl na Ghezn with Daario Naharis, their lieutenant. Mero seems more sexually vulgar towards Daenerys and so Jorah asks him to mind his tongue.

With Darrio’ aid, Jorah and Grey Worm arrives at Yunkai from one of its tunnels and the three of them succeeds in opening the gates of Yunkai, which allowed the Unsullied to come in and win the city for Daenerys.

Jorah with Barriston, Daario and Missandei, is with Daenerys when she is greeted with open arms by the newly liberated slaves of Yunkai.

While feeding her dragons, Dany is admonished by Jorah again about the truth that they are not tameble beasts. He also tells her that Daario Naharis and Grey Worm are gambling. Jorah faces the crucifixion of a small child when the army of Unsullied halts at unison. They witness 164 dead children along the way to Meereen.

Jorah is with Daenerys for the longest time and so he wants to face the champion sent by Meereen but Daenerys denies him to go.

Ser Jorah tells Daenerys that Joffrey Baratheon is poisoned at his wedding. Daenerys fellow mates debate about invading Westeros due to its current state. Jorah denies them as he believes that they do not have as much forces to conquer the Westeros. After Daenerys asks everyone to leave, she tells Jorah that she wants to stay in Slaver’s Bay.

After some weeks, Jorah enters Daenerys’ chambers early in the morning and finds out Daario Naharis partially dressed leaving the chambers. After entering the queen’s conference room, she tells Jorah that she sent Daario Naharis to take Second Sons to Yunkai to gain back the control on the city. Jorah convinces her not to execute the masters. Daenerys think and tell him to assign Hizdahr zo Loraq as her delegate to offer them choices: to live free in new world or die with the older one. She also asks him to let Daario know that it was Jorah who changed her mind. Barristan Selmy receives a scroll form a boy with the seal of Robert Baratheon and that it was signed in the year Jorah and Daenerys first met. Barriston accosts Jorah abput this before revealing it to Daenerys. Barriston also tells Jorah that he know that he worked as a spy for Robert Baratheon. Jorah asks to let him talk with Daenerys alone but he replies that he would never get a chance to talk to her in private again. Jorah tries to explain Daenerys abput the plot of Tywin Lannister to break them. On Daenerys’ request, he also confesses to tell all the information regarding to her to Essos. Daenerys tells him that because of that she might get killed but he tells her that he saved her.

Daenerys does not listen to him and ask him to move out of the city the same day or he will be slayed. Therefore, Jorah leaves Meereen.

Jorah Mormont in Season 5

Jorah moves to Volantis and drinking in a brothel. From quite a distance he recognizes Tyrion Lannister and Varys. Then after sometime, when Tyrion is alone peeing, Jorah binds him with a rope and tells him that he is taking him to the Queen.

With Tyrion prisoner, Jorah steals a boat and starts travelling towards Meereen. While travelling, Tyrion annoys him till the time he removes Tyrion’s gag. Tyrion quickly notifies that they are travelling towards east and not to west towards Cersei in King’s Landing. Jorah tells that he is taking Tyrion to Daenerys Targaryen. Tyrion also tells him that they are on the same track as he also going to meet Daenerys. Jorah knocks Tyrion when he asks him a dozens of questions and annoy him to the core. By the powerful knock of Jorah, Tyrion becomes unconscious.

While continuing their journey, Tyrion continuously jokes on House Mormont, and Bear Island. They both gave a stunned look when they find Drogon flying past them. Suddenly men infected with Greyscale attack them but they Jorah manages to fight them and pulls Tyrion underwater. Tyrion wakes up and found himself saved by Jorah. Jorah notices that he has been infected with Greyscale.

Jorah and Tyrion walk to the Meereen as they have no boat. Tyrion tells Jorah that he knew Jeor Mormont from the trip to the Wall and also tells him that his own men killed him leaving Jorah in sadness. While they were talking about Daenerys, they were captured by slavers. Malko, the leader of slavers plans to sell them in Volantis, but Tyrion succeeds in convincing them to let Jorah participate in the fighting pits in Meereen. When Malko does not agree, Jorah tells him that he had slew Qotho in single combat and which increases Malko’s interest and gets convinced to take them to Meereen.

Jorah is put on auction by Malko on the outskirts of Meereen. Yezzan zo Qaggaz buys Jorah and Tyrion as well. When Jorah comes to know that Daenerys is present in the fighting pit, he takes a sword and knocks down every other fighter but she could not recognize him as he was wearing a helmet. Daenerys orders her men to take Jorah out when he approaches her and takes out his helmet. Jorah tells her that he had brought a gift for her and Tyrion comes out, meeting Daenerys.

After she come to know that Daenerys wants to advise her she asks what should she do with her and Tyrion answers that Jorah is dedicated to her but she is not ready to forgive him, so she asks her men to remove Jorah from the city again. Jorah returns to the fighting pits and asks him if he won the match he wants to belong to Yezzan.

Jorah afterwards joins the Great Games at Daznak’s Pit. When Daenerys recognizes Jorah she is visibly disgusted and then Jorah is seen severely wounded. Tyrion tells Daenerys that she could save Jorah by abandoning the fight at any time but she refuses. Jorah still manages to win the match. As the match ends, Jorah throws the spear at Daenerys killing Son of the Harpy who was sneaking behind her. Many of the people reveal themselves as Son of the Harpy and starts killing everyone. Jorah tries to save Daenerys but at last is surrounded by them. Suddenly Drogon appears in the arena and kills the Son of the Harpy and scaring the rest. Drogon flies with Daenerys and Tyrion, Daario, Missandei and Jorah keeps looking at her.

The three argue about the betrayal of Jorah but they comes to a point that they would not decide anything until Daenerys doesn’t comes back. They decide Jorah and Daario will go in search of her. They ask Tyrion to keep the city under control as he had the political experience and Grey Worm to control the Unsullied. So, Daario and Jorah starts finding their Queen in the Dothraki Sea.
