About Brienne of Tarth

Brienne of Tarth is one of the major character of the Game of Thrones particularly in third, fourth and fifth seasons. She is very well portrayed by Gwendoline Christie. She is a fierce warrior of House Tarth.

She is made the member of the King Renly Baratheon’s new Kingsguard after winning a tournament. After Renly’s assassination she becomes the sword sworn of Catelyn Stark and pledges to avenge Renly’s demise. She is ordered by Catelyn Stark to take Jaime Lannister back to King’s Landing. So that they will return her two daughters, Sansa and Arya but after Catelyn’s demise, Jaime starts finding and swears to protect them.

Her search takes her to the Riverlands and then to North, but after her offers of help are turned down by Sansa and Arya, Brienne stops her mission and kills Stannis to avenge Renly’s death.

Biography of Brienne of Tarth

Brienne is the only child alive of Lord Selwyn Tarth of Evenfall Hall. She is very tall and muscular and developed a taste of martial activity as a child. Brienne dreams of becoming a knight.

Brienne’s mother died when she was pretty young. Her siblings also died in childhood. She is the only heir of House Tarth, she gets a fairly promising marriage prospect from men, but due to her personality she never got married.

Brienne of Tarth in Season 2

Brienne joins Renly’s forces and proves herself by beating Ser Loras Tyrell. She ask him to name her as the Kingsguard as a reward. Renly agrees to her. Lady Catelyn Stark comes to the camp for an alliance between Renly and King Robb Stark, her son. She asks Catelyn to call her Brienne as she does not consider herself as “Lady”.

Brienne of Tarth in Season 2

Lord Petyr Baelish also goes to see Renly’s camp, as an ambassador of King Joffrey Baratheon. Renly tells Baelish that he does not consider him trustworthy and tells that Brienne is truly loyal. Petyr tells him that he is ready to open the gates of King’s Landing for Renly’s forces. Baelish also asks Catelyn Stark to exchange her Jaime Lannister for her daughters. Brienne protects Renly during the meeting with Stannis Baratheon, his brother. Renly is unfortunately killed by Shadow. Brienne seems devastated when she saw Renly dying but she recognizes the likelihood of Shadow towards Stannis. All the people think that Brienne killed Renly when they saw Renly in Brienne’s arms and so they try to kill him but Brienne manages to kill Ser Robar Royce and Emmon Cuy and with Catelyn she flees the camp.

Brienne becomes Catelyn’s sworn sword. They travel to Robb’s camp in the Westerlands. Catelyn seems disgusted when she hears that Theon Greyjoy captured Winterfell and her sons are made prisoners.

Jaime Lannister kills Torrhen Karstark and escapes the prison. He is soon captured but Torrhen’s father asks for his head as avenge. Catelyn convinces them that they should wait for Robb. She knows that it would be impossible for them to defend the Karstarks and so she asks Brienne to take Jaime to King’s Landing. She decides to liberate him in order to get back Sansa and Arya who she thinks are kept hostage by the Lannisters. Brienne travels by horse until she finds a boat to evade. She is constantly barbed by Jaime about her appearance.

Brienne reminds Jaime that she is sworn to Lady Catelyn not to Starks when they pass a tree where three corpses of girls are hanged because they had relationship with Lannister men. Despite the need to go, Brienne wants to bury the dead girls. She tells the soldiers that she is escorting a prisoner back to Riverrun when they come to them. Jaime tells them that he is in chains because he has stolen a pig. Brienne silently suffers the humiliation when the Stark soldiers laugh at her being a woman. When one of the soldiers recognizes Jaime, Brienne forcefully fights with them. She quickly murders two of them but intentionally kills the third one slowly. Jaime is impressed by her skills.

Brienne is escorted by Brienne to King’s Landing. They are spotted by a traveler, Jaime asks to kill him since he recognized them and will give their whereabouts but Brienne denies assassinating him.

Afterwards, they have to cross a river, Brienne takes a safer route. Jaime distracts Brienne and takes her spare sword. They engage in sword fight when he cuts his bonds.

Jaime starts getting tired and so Brienne jabs him with kicks and punches. Jaime is at last slumps to the ground in exhaustion. Suddenly riders from House Bolton comes there whose leader is Locke. Jaime tries to negotiate a deal but Locke tells him that he will be killed by Robb and both of them are taken captive.

The Bolton men sing in chorus The Bear and the Maiden Fair. They are both tied back on one of the horses. Jaime admonishes Brienne that they will try to rape her after making camp at night. They were only sent to besiege Jaime and so Brienne is nothing for them and so they will assassinate her without any hesitation. Brienne says that she will fight with them.

The same night, Locke’s men make camp and drag Brienne into bushes to physically abuse her. Jaime seems disgusted and so tells Locke that she is a noblewoman and the only heir to Lord Selwyn Tarth. Her father can pay ransom for her if she is unharmed.  Locke agrees and calls his men before they will try to rape Brienne and they tie her to a tree again.

Jaime tries to barter him by reminding Locke of the wealth and power Tywin has but this makes Locke furious and he cuts Jaime’s hand. Later, due to his hand mutilated, Jaime does not want to eat or live. Brienne barbs him that he cannot take it when life gets real and asks him why he helped her escape rape, he does not reciprocate her but starts eating.

After both reaches Harrenhal where Jaime’s hand is treated, Brienne and Jaime share an intimate physical moment in the communal bath. Jaime mocks her by saying that she was unable to protect Renly Baratheon and she starts going but then Jaime apologize her and tells her the story about why he killed the Mad King. After collapsing in her arms, she calls for help for Kingslayer but he tells her that he is Jaime.

Lord Bolton agrees Jaime to leave for King’s Landing but decides to keep Brienne with them in Harrenhal. Soon later Lord Bolton departs to Twins to attend Edmure Tully’s wedding leaving Brienne with Locke. Locke tries to ransom Brienne to Lord Selwyn, who offers 300 Gold Dragons. He rejects the offer. He is furious and so throws her in the fit to fight with a bear giving only a wooden sword to defend her.

After hearing that Brienne is with Locke, Jaime comes back to save her. Jaime jumps in the pit and with some help from Steelshanks, both of them manages to escape the pit. Locke relents and so Jaime and Brienne depart.

Jaime and Brienne reach the entrance of Red Keep. She smiles at Jaime assuring him after a peasant calls him a country boy.

After some weeks of their return, Brienne meets Margaery Tyrell. Brienne and Margaery slip off to confabulate about Renly’s assassination. Brienne tells her in detail about what she saw and how the Shadow has Stannis’ face and also assures her that she will take the revenge of Renly’s demise.

The same day, Brienne rendezvous with Jaime to confabulate about the Stark girls. Jaime does not seem interested in completing the promise he made to the now deceased Catelyn Stark. Brienne asks him to look in her eyes and say that Sansa is safe in King’s Landing and Jaime is unable to do so.

Brienne witnesses the wedding of King Joffrey and Queen Margaery. Joffrey mistakes her as the murderer of Renly Baratheon, which Margaery corrects quickly. Cersei finds it interesting that Brienne has served Renly, Catelyn and now Jaime. Brienne tells her that she does not serve her brother, but Cersei thinks that Brienne is in love with Jaime.

After Sansa escapes from the King’s Landing, Jaime asks Brienne to find her and keep her safe from Cersei. As a gift he gives her armor. He also gives her Podrick Payne, Tyrion’s former squire to accompany her while travelling. He asks her to keep a name for her Valyrian sword and she names her “Oathkeeper”.

While travelling, Podrick proves to be a barrier for her. Ha had few problems with his horse and also sets blaze the rabbit they are going to eat. Brienne queries Podrick about his duties as squire to Tyrion and he tells her that his job was mostly to pour wine and other small tasks. Podrick tells her about how he killed Ser Mandon Moore of the Kingsguard when he tried to kill Tyrion.

Brienne of Tarth in Season 4

After sometime, Brienne and Podrick halt at an inn where they are served with kidney pie made by Hot Pie.  Brienne tells him that she is in service of Stark lady and she is here to find and protect Sansa Stark but Hot Pie calls them traitors. While they are leaving, Podrick tells Brienne to not to reveal the motto behind their quest as it might be dangerous, but Hot Pie serves them baked bread and Brienne’s loyalty is served. He also tells them that he knows nothing about Sansa but he has seen Arya who was in the company of Sandor Clegane. Podrick tells her that they went to Lysa Arryn’s house.

While travelling to the Bloody Gate, Brienne and Podrick see Arya and the Hound who has just returned from The Eyrie. Brienne asks Arya to come with her and promises to keep her safe but Arya refuses. The Hound tells her that it is not safe for her as all her elder relatives are no more alive or captive. Brienne and Hound engages in a fight which is won by Brienne. When she comes back to Podrick, Arya is gone.

After failing to find Arya, Podrick queries Brienne if they wanted to go the Castle Black to check if Sansa is there with Jon Snow, Brienne disagrees to him as Podrick is now miles away from the dangers of King’s Landing. Podrick shows his utter desire to be with Brienne as her squire to find Sansa, but she tells her that she is neither a knight nor his mother.

When they were eating, Podrick identifies Sansa Stark sitting with Petyr Baelish. They are surrounded by guards; Brienne goes to them and tells Sansa that she swore an oath to Catelyn to keep her safe. Baelish counters her by telling Sansa that Brienne is a complete stranger swore to protect Catelyn and Renly and failed both the times. Sansa denies Brienne’s offer of safety while Petyr asks her to stay with them as the roads are not safe. Brienne senses the trap and so flees with Podrick on stolen horses. Brienne is forced to let Sansa and Petyr flee since she was separated from Podrick while chasing. Brienne rescue him by killing two guards and they both starts preparing to catch Sansa and Petyr.

Brienne and Podrick watches Petyr and Sansa reaching Moat Cailin. She decides to go around the Moat Cailin as following them might prove fatal. Podrick is seem worried as they might lose sight of them, but Brienne tells him that they do not have to follow them so closely as she knew where they are heading to.

While making camp, Brienne comes to know how Podrick became the squire of Tyrion. Podrick praises the martial prowess of Brienne. Brienne apologize for her rude behaviors towards him and offers to teach him how to ride a horse and wield a sword.

Podrick then queries Brienne about her past with Renly Baratheon. She tells him the entire story related to Renly Baratheon and how he told her that these are not the things to cry for. Brienne also tells her that Renly was interested only in men. She tells him that there is nothing hateful than failing to protect the ones you love and taking the revenge of his death by killing Stannis will show her love.

Brienne and Podrick reach Winterfell and take a room in the Winter town. Podrick says that Sansa is home now but Brienne tells him that Winterfell is now full of Boltons and is not safe at all. She engages a servant when he comes to serve them and tells him that she is sworn to Lady Catelyn even if she is dead. Brienne then reveals that Sansa is in Winterfell and she needs him to get that message to her.

Brienne and Podrick wait for Sansa’s signal and continuously stare at the tower.

Still waiting for Sansa’s signal, Brienne is admonished by Podrick of the arrival of Stannis. She stops her mission of saving Sansa. Unfortunately when Sansa lights the candle in the tower, Brienne leaves and Sansa’s signal are not seen by her. After the battle, Brienne finds Stannis wounded very badly in the Wolfswood.

Brienne of Tarth in Season 5

Stannis thinks that she is fighting from the Boltons but she tells him, her real name and allegiance. Stannis agrees to the involvement in the murder of Renly. Brienne takes out her sword and asks for any last words, Stannis asks Brienne to do her duty after she swings the swords and kill him.
